Abu-Zaabal Fertilizers and Chemicals Company is one of the largest fertilizers producers in Egypt. The company produces phosphoric acid by the wet-process using local phosphate ore. The raw acid produced is black in colour and contains considerable amounts of suspended and dissolved impurities. Several methods were experimentally tested for the purification of this acid including: gravity settling, treatment with activated charcoal, treatment with bleaching earth, and treatment with activated local calcium ben-tonite. The best operating conditions for each treatment method were experimentally determined. It was concluded that the best purification method is the treatment with activated local calcium bentonite which results in a clear and much purer acid.
