Investigations of the SO2 sorption on a carbon sorbent. IX. The thermal effect of the process

The thermal effect of the adsorption of sulphur dioxide was determined in an adiabatic flow reactor with a fixed bed of carbon sorbent and a flowing gaseous phase. The investigations were carried out at the temperature of 120°C on the Polish carbon sorbent SWS-6. The heat balance of the adsorber was formulated, and basing on measurements of temperature changes in the sorbent bed as well as on changes of the temperature and composition of the gaseous phase the thermal effect of the process was determined. The obtained results confirmed the complex multistage course of the process. The mean thermal effect of the process amounts to 250 kJ per 1 mole of adsorbed sulphur dioxide. This value is lower than the estimated heat of the adsorption of SO2 determined basing on information taken from literature as well as on theoretical calculations.
