Separation of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) ions from sulfuric acid solutions with TOPO by bulk and supported liquid membranes

Results are reported for the transport of chromium(VI) anions through bulk liquid membranes and for the separation of chromium(VI) and chromium(III) ions from equimolar mixtures of chrornium(VI) and chromium(VI) across supported liquid membranes. As the ionic carrier tri-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) was used. It is shown that chromium(VI) transport can be described by the first-order kinetic equation. The kinetic parameters as well as removal degree of chromium(VI) transported through bulk liquid membranes were studied as a function of acidity and chromium(VI) concentration in source phase, concentration of TOPO in organic phase, and content of receiving phase. The separation of chromium(VI) and chromium(III) ions in supported liquid membrane process is possible from source phase containing sulfuric acid aqueous solutions at concentration above 0.10 M into receiving phase containing water or aqueous potassium hydroxide. The increase of selectivity for chromium(VI) and chromium(III) transport is observed with the increase of H2SO4 concentration, and with the decrease of chromium ions concentration in source phase. The concentration of chromium(VI) in receiving phase was achieved by using higher volumes of source phase in comparison with volumes of receiving phase.
