Ammonium nitrate ammoniate samples were heated up to 423- 590 K to study their thermal stability. Under pressures of 1.5- 24 MPa ammonium nitrate decomposition was not observed. The behaviour of the system does not change in the presence of hydrogen or methane in the gaseous phase and ammonium chloride or iron powder added to the sample. Ignition experiments on ammoniate samples were carried out at the temperature of 393 K under the ammonia pressure of several MPa. Ignition sources were a heating spiral, a pyrotechnic igniter or black powder. The experiments confirmed the very low ability of the pure liquid to initiate a conversion. The conversion of ammonium nitrate ammoniate activated by an addition of nitromethane was initiated by an electrically heated wire. The influence of ammonia vapour pressure, added solid substances such as powders of iron and iron oxides and the presence of hydrogen and methane in the gaseous phase on the relative tendency of ammoniate to undergo an exothermic conversion has been assessed.
