Determination of the protective properties from impedance data of polymer coatings on steel

The behaviour of polyvinyl protective coating on steel under conditions of immersin in 3% NaCl and exposure in a salt fog chamber has been investigated by impedance spectroscopy. The parameters of the proposed equivalent circuit, based on a physical model for the corrosion of steel protected by coatings were calculated from data of the impedance spectra by means of the nonlinear least squares fitting. Analysis of the change of parameters with exposure time was used in the assessment of the degree of coating degradation. Conclusions were in good agreement with the visual examination after long-time exposure.
