For many years, the goal of decision-aid (DA), as seen within e context of Operational Research (OR), was to find the right solution to problems confronting decision-makers. Today our expectations concerning OR DA are generally more modest: we anticipate that this discipline will provide partial answers to questions asked by one or more actors in the decision-making process. Working within either of these perspectives forces analysts basing their work on algorithms or heuristics to assign numerical values to various parameters in order to obtain results. The true value of in parameters, however; may either be unknown (imprecise measuring instruments, uncertainty concerning the future) or, in some cases, even non-existent. For such parameters, a set of values appropriate to the model used should be taken to consideration. The robust conclusion concept, detailed and illustrated in this article, aims to elaborate partial solutions in such a way as to take account of this aspect of reality. Underestimating, or indeed ignoring, its importance could explain why many results obtained in OR-DA have little or no relevance when applied to practical situations. Developing robust conclusions could supply a missing link for this discipline, thus generating renewed interest in OR-DA amongst its potential users as well as suggesting new research orientations for theoreticians working in this field.
