Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a form of fracture which requires a chemical environment in conjunction with an essentially static (or monotonically varying) tensile stress. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) only occurs under the simultaneous effects of a mechanical tensile stress and corrosion medium. The magnitude of the mechanical load plays an important role in this process. Exclusively effective are tensile stresses. The relationship between the applied tensile stress and logarithm of the time to failure is linear. Appearance of stress corrosion cracking in practical applications has caused that the Al-Zn-Mg-(Cu) alloys at their peak strength are not recommended for aggressive environments. The susceptibility of any aluminum alloy to stress corrosion cracking is related to many environmental (chemical) , metallurgical (micro structural) and mechanical factors, may of them being interrelated and difficult to describe in a more systematic way. This paper describe the mechanical factors which delate to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
