Owing to their undesired toxicological, mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties, nitrogen-containing water disinfection by-products have recently become a matter of growing concern. This paper provides not only a review of recent knowledge about the mechanisms underlying the formation of nitrosamines (specifically nitrosodimethylamine, NDMA) in tap water and wastewaters, but also an account of the methods that are in use for their analysis. Since nitrosamines are classified as carcinogenic species, any report on relevant issues is examined with great interest by both scientists and potable water producers. The paper specifies the controversies about the mechanisms governing the formation of NDMA, a species occurring primarily in water that has been made subject to chloramination. Consideration is also given to other oxidation processes regarded as potential contributors to the formation of nitrosamines. In addition, the paper summarizes the latest views and opinions regarding the removal of, and the analytical methods for, the nitrosamines formed.
