Abstrakty
This paper deals with the fatigue crack growth behavior of aluminum alloys 2024, 7075 and 8090 subjected to variable amplitude loading. Different aspects considered are : single overload tests in air and in vacuum at load ratios R of 0.1 and 0.5, repeated overload tests and tests under an aircraft wing lower surface loading. The crack growth behaviors observed are correlated to micromechanisms which can be quite different for the different conditions studied. It is shown that changes in micromechanisms can occur under certain conditions leading to completely different crack growth resistance. Such a behavior cannot be taken into account using conventional mechanistic models.
