Kinetic characteristics of ignition and burning of aluminium, Al-C, and Al-B-C powders suspended in air and of aluminium + ammonium nitrate powders in argon are measured behind incident and reflected shock waves. Ignition delays and burning times of these mixtures measured in incident and reflected shock waves significantly differ, which is accounted for by a heavy effect of the flow dynamics on ignition an burning of particles. The representative reaction times measure in mixtures containing large amounts of solid-phase oxidizer and metal powders are shown to be very sensitive to the injection technique used to produce suspension and the mass of injected materials (due to particle coagulation). Mechanical activation of aluminium doped with carbon or carbon + boron can both significantly reduce the ignition temperature and make the energy release times independent of the injected mass even behind reflected shock waves, where manifestation of this effect is particularly prominent.
