Przedstawiono naukowe osiągnięcia Oliviera Heaviside´a, który był geniuszem nie wykorzystującym swojego talentu dla samego siebie. Był on jednym z najznamienitszych elektryków na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Uważne studia jego prac wskazują, że był on wyróżniającym się pionierem w rozwoju teorii zjawisk elektrycznych ujmując je matematycznie nie tylko na podstawie dedukcji, ale także eksperymentu. Jego wybitny i przełomowy wkład do teorii telegraficznych i telefonicznych linii przesyłowych jest bezsprzeczny a jego priorytet w tej dziedzinie nie podlega dyskusji. Dotyczy to także jego osiągnięć w dziedzinie rachunku operatorowego. Rachunek operatorowy jest obecnie uważany przez matematyków jako jedno z najważniejszych osiągnięć w rozwoju matematyki w ostatnim kwartale XIX wieku. Doniosłość jego wkładu, na podstawie analizy wektorowej, w rozwój i wyjaśnienie opracowanej przez Maxwella teorii elektrodynamiki była w owym czasie słabo rozpoznana, a przełomowe prace nad tymi zagadnieniami nie przyniosły mu uznania. Heaviside wniósł istotny wkład w racjonalizację systemu jednostek stosowanych w elektrotechnice, do terminologii w tej dziedzinie a także do wielu innych zagadnień.

This paper presents main scientific achievements of Olivier Heaviside, a man who was a noble genius and who never exploited his rare talents for his own sake. He was one of the greatest electricians on the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. Careful study of his works indicates that he was a distinguished pioneer in the theory of electrical sciences who claimed that mathematics depends not only on deduction but also on empiricism. His outstanding and revolutionary contribution to the theory of electrical communications and of telephone line transmission is evident, and his priority in this is beyond question. This is also true for the operational calculus. The operational calculus is now regarded by mathematicians as one of the most important pieces of mathematical research carried out in the last quarter of the 19th century. The value of his clarification and development of Maxwell´s theory in the general sense has been, on the other hand, little recognized and he had got less credit than it was his due. Heaviside has elaborated very important contributions to the rationalization of units, to the terminology, and to many other topics.
