Rola satelitów we współczesnej telekomunikacji znacznie się zmieniła w stosunku do roli, jaką odgrywały one w latach 70. i 80. ubiegłego wieku. Opisano systemy satelitarne z małymi terminalami, w tym systemy reporterskie. Zwrócono uwagę na stale rosnącą atrakcyjność satelitarnych systemów rozsiewczych i dostępowych. Przedstawiono satelitę Astra 1K - największego cywilnego satelitę telekomunikacyjnego i opisano system SkyBridge jako przykład satelitarnego systemu dostępowego. Opisano satelitarne systemy multimedialne ARCS (geostacjonarny) i Teledesic (niskoorbitowy).

Satellites play quite different role in telecommunication networks nowadays than they used to play in the 70h and 80th years of the previous century. VSAT and SNG systems were described in the paper. Increasingly important role of satellites in TV broadcasting and access systems were underlined. Astra 1K - the world's largest ever telecommunication satellite - was presented. SkyBridge system was described as an example of a broadband access system. Two satellite multimedia systems: ARCS (geostationary) and Teledesic (LEO) were presented.
