Wiele podręczników podaje opis współczynnika kurtozy w sposób uproszczony lub niekompletny. W artykule zilustrowano jak interpretowana winna być kurtoza dla rozkładów: normalnego, prostokątnego i bimodalnego. Wykazano, że na podstawie informacji o wartości kurtozy trudno jest określić kształt badanego rozkładu, zwłaszcza w przypadku gdy współczynnik kurtozy przyjmuje wartości ujemne.

A description of the kurtosis statistics has long been overlooked by authors in statistics and measurement. Many textbooks, however, describe or illustrate kurtosis incompletely or incorrectly. In this article ilustrates how the kurtosis statistic may interpreted when it is computed for approximately normal, rectangular, and bimodal distributions of measures. It is difficult to the determine the shape of distribution from the kurtosis value alone, since almost any distribution may have a negative kurtosis value.
