Omówiono wpływ teorii informacji Shannona - jednej z najbardziej spektakularnych teorii naukowych XX wieku - na współczesne nauki informacyjne. Przedstawiono sylwetkę tego wybitnego uczonego i jego dorobek naukowy. Omówiono podstawowe tezy teorii informacji i podano przykłady jej praktycznych zastosowań.

In this paper, the influence of Shannon's Information Theory - one of the most spectacular theories of the XX century - on the contemporary information sciences is discussed. The personality of this outstanding scientist and its work is presented. The main thesis of Information Theory arę reviewed and examples of its applications arę given.
