A research Project named SPEAR (Seismic Performance Assessment and Rehabilitation) is currently being carried out by a consortium of European Partners, with the participation of overseas research institutions. The Project, funded by the European Commission, is specifically aimed at mitigating the risk posed by seismically unsafe existing older RC and masonry frame buildings. In the framework of the SPEAR Project, pseudo-dynamic testing of a real size asymmetric 3-storey frame structure, before and after retrofitting, is being carried out. The data collected during the tests will be very useful to judge the effectiveness of analytical or Code-format models. This paper is focused on presenting the pre-test analytical work on the structure, consisting in two parts: 1) the application of current assessment procedures to the structure and 2) the analysis of the structure by means of numerical models with different levels of refinement. Moreover, the main features of the two-way pseudo-dynamic test are presented.
