The paper deals with the optimum features of a sewage sludge drying system and outlines ED directives on the use of organic substances. Details of two sludge drying systems are presented. Obringheim, Germany was built for a community, which accepts also dewatered sludge from other local sewage systems. This is an advanced drying technology, which combines sewage sludge drying and hot gas production in a cyclone furnace. The dried granulate is burnt directly in the cyclone furnace, the hot gas thus produced is reused for drying. The fluidized bed dryer is indirectly heated via a heat exchanger. The cyclone furnace off-gas and also the uncondensated dryer gases are treated and the values of the German off-gas (17th BIMSchV) standards are not only met but some actual values are far better. The plant in Pecs, Hungary was originally designed as a drum dryer but was later supplemented with equipment for thermal granulate use (EcoDry). This was not a costly investment, only major units being added and in cooperation with local companies. The paper reports some, especially emission, data. The basics for supplementing existing sludge drying systems are explained, as are the possibilities of operating flexibly with variable calorific value of sludge feed.
