Analytical monitoring of drinking water quality in the light of requirements determined in European Union directive and in proposal for amendment of Polish regulations

Abstrakty
Changes in quality requirements for drinking water presented in a new directive of European Union are reasonable and proved with reasons. It is good that the proposal for amendment of Polish regulations - discussed and anticipated for a long time - takes from this document almost all the decisions concerning permissible concentrations of components and physicochemical factors in drinking water. However, the purposefulness of so wide extension of the number of standard parameters in comparison to EU Directive is questionable. The problem of the selection of analytical monitoring methods should be also solved more springly in Polish regulations; best of all - similarly to that accepted in EU Directive. The parameters which should be tested by current monitoring and give regular information about organoleptic and microbiological quality of water supplied for consumption by people as well as information about effectiveness of water treatment are also determined in enclosures to EU Directive. These parameters include; ammonia, nitrites, colour, aluminium (only in the case of its salts application for coagulation of water impurities) turbidity, pH, conductivity, taste, odour, iron and bacteriological indexes. Simultaneously, the clause is made that the member countries can complete this list with additional parameters. The aim of the periodical monitoring covering all the parameters taken into consideration in Directive is to get information allowing to state whether these permissible values are kept. Simultaneously, the possibility to neclect such parameters for which the risk of excessing the maximum value in tested water does not occur has been introduced. The strictly determined frequency of analysis depends on volume of water distributed and produced during 1 day was accepted for both types of monitoring. It should be expected that also these questions will find a proper image in the amended Polish regulations.
