Organic matter removal by adsorption and biodegradation on GAC filter beds
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
Activated carbons made use of in water treatment owe their specific properties to their developed internal structure, which is characterized by a specific surface. Macroporous carbons accumulate 1.5 to 3 times as much biomass capable of degrading organic matter as do microporous carbons, which have a better capacity of removing dissolved organics (DOC). The experimental study reported in this paper was carried out at the pilot plant of the Wroclaw Waterworks, using samples of infiltration water (which had been treated by aeration and sand filtration), as well as micro- and macroporous GAC beds. The contribution of adsorption and biode gradation to the efficiency of organic matter removal was assessed. The utility of the two carbons when applied for the needs of water treatment was also analyzed.
