The drop in the permeate flux during ultrafiltration of agueous solutions containing organic macromolecules was studied, and the intensity of fouling was related to the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the membrane,as well as to the parameters (pH and Ca2+ ion concentration ) of the investigated water. In this study, use was made of strongly hydrophilic ( cellulose acetate) and stongly hydrophobic ( polysulfone or polyamide ) membranes. Thus, the stongly hydrophilic membranes were found to be less prone to fouling produced by the sorption of organic macromolecules, wherewesthe strongly hydrophobic membranes suffered from a consideable drop in pereability, which was associated with their grather proneness to fouling. The presence of mineral salts intensifying the phenomenon of membrane fouling, and reducing permeate flux.
