Presented is a joint approach to te problem of drinking and household water supply of the city of Wrocław ( with a population of about 760,000 ).The condition ot the entrie supply system is analyzed,particular consideration beig given to the waterpipenetwork and its influence on the guality of the water recived by the user.Water quality (both in the intakes operated by the waterworks and in the pipeline) is monitored continuosly. The flood of July 1997 raised serious problems to the management of the water supply system. The experience gained in those days made it possible to develop reliable measures which would work under critical conditions.Since approximately half of the water volume supplied to the users comes from infilitration intakes wich are fed by surface water,the aquiferous area in general, and the potential points of pollution discharge in particular,were subject to thorough analysis.Based on the analysis not only of the present condition,but of the developmental prospects as well, a critical account of alternative water sources is given and other methods of potable water recovery are considered with the aim to upgrade the quality of the water supplied.
