Once we have captured carbon dioxide from fossil power plants what can be done with it? Geological storage looks promising, and the capacity available more than adequate. Geological storage of gases and liquids is a well-known technology applied mainly to natural gas. From exploration for oil and gas and for geothermal energy, we know of many different types of reservoirs suitable for storage of C02. Storage sites may consist of highly porous geological layers with a large C02 storage capacity and hight permeability, allowing C02 to be pumped down quickly, for instance sandstone or limestone beds. To make sure that C02 will not migrate to the surface and escape into the atmosphere, the storage site must be tightly sealed, for instance by claystone.
