Starania o ochronę ekosystemu Morza Bałtyckiego oraz troska o mieszkańców miast portowych i rejonów przybrzeżnych zaowocowały wprowadzeniem rozwiązań legislacyjnych zmniejszających dopuszczalne limity zawartości związków siarki w paliwach statkowych. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie, jak nowe regulacje prawne wpłyną na konkurencyjność żeglugi na Bałtyku. Bazą do rozważań jest analiza cen paliw niskosiarkowych, ich wpływu na wysokość frachtów oraz potencjalne konsekwencje dla serwisów żeglugowych.

Efforts towards protection of the Baltic Sea ecosystem, as well as concerns for inhabitants of port cities and the coastal areas resulted in introduction of new legal requirements, which decrease the permissible limits of sulphur compounds content in marine fuels. The main purpose of this article is to elaborate the possible influence of the new requirements on the Baltic shipping competitiveness. The discussion is grounded on an analysis of future low-sulphur fuel prices, their influence on freight rates and potential consequences for shipping services operating on the Baltic Sea.
