Structure and corrosion resistance of the composite layers produced on AZ91D magnesium alloy by a duplex method

Recently, the increasing pressure to replace aluminum alloys by the lighter magnesium alloys bas been observed. However because of the high chemical activity of magnesium, the ability of magnesium alloys to compete with aluminum alloys depends on the advances achieved in the area of the surface engineering of the magnesium alloys. The present paper describes a new hybrid method of producing CrCrN-type composite layers on the AZ91D alloy. The method is of the duplex type, namely it combines plasma assisted nitriding with PVD processes. The method allows producing composite layers of diffusion character, up to 10[mu]m thick, with an outer zone built of CrN. The structure of these layers was characterized by X-far diffraction, optical metallography, SEM, EDS and SIMS. The corrosion resistance of !he layers was examined by potentiodynamic method and the HV0.05 surface hardness was determined. The relation between the properties of the surface treated AZ91D alloy and the microstructure of the layers produced using the proposed method is analyzed.
