Optimum and suboptimum operation of high-frequency class- D Zero-Voltage-Switching tuned power amplifier

The main features of the Class-D Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) tuned power amplifier are its high efficiency and high power-output capability. In the paper the operation principle of the Class-D ZVS amplifier are discussed. The simplified analysis assuming the sinusoidal current in the output series-resonant circuit is presented and the equations describing the amplifier operation in the optimum and suboptimum conditions are derived. The solutions obtained for these equations are presented in the analytical form for the optimum and in the numerical form for the suboptimum operation. Laboratory models of Class-D ZVS amplifier were built and tested. Experimental results were in a good agreement with theoretical predictions.
