In spite of competing non-nuclear analytical techniques (AAS, ICP-ES, ICP-MS, etc), reactor neutron activation analysis (NAA) continues to be the most powerful multi-element analytical technique used in geosciences, life sciences, and materials science. Non-destructive NAA, being a technique based on a physical principle different from those of other trace element techniques, should always be used, if feasible, when the need for better quantification of trace elements at ultra-low levels is desirable. In the certification of reference material, NAA as an accurate technique has played and is still playing a key role, even for elements where other techniques have replaced NAA in practical work. The radioanalytical complex REGATA at the IBR-2 reactor in Dubna, RF, for more than 20 years of operation has become a source of analytical data for a considerable number of international projects carried out by specialists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) member and non-member states. Experience in applying conventional and epithermal neutron activation analysis for some challenging areas of studying the environment is reviewed. Special emphasis is made on collaborative projects with specialists form different scientific institutions of Poland, a member-state of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

W porównaniu z nienuklearnymi technikami analitycznymi (AAS, ICP-ES, ICP-MS itp.), neutronowa analiza aktywacyjna NAA jest nadal bardziej wydajnym narzędziem w badaniach geologicznych, środowiskowych oraz w badaniach materiałowych. Nieniszcząca metoda NAA może być wykorzystywana tam, gdzie są konieczne oznaczenia na poziomie ultraśladów. Kompleks badawczy REGATA przy reaktorze IBR-2 w Dubnej od ponad 20 lat jest miejscem realizacji znacznej liczby projektów międzynarodowych, wykonywanych przez specjalistów z krajów członkowskich wspólnego Instytutu Badań Nuklearnych JINR (wśród nich z Polski), a także z krajów niebędących członkami JINR.
