It seems that the complexity of engineering constructions makes a holistic approach, also referred to as systematic, the most appropriate one for their practical design. Unlike the analytical approach, which focuses on examining the components and their descriptions, a systematic approach concentrates on the interaction between components and the effects of this interaction. Each system, including an engineering one, can be examined in information categories. In the paper, an engineering object has been treated as a multi-channel converter of information. An information system as a connector between the areas of reality and abstraction has been shown. The schematic diagram presents information connections between an information system and a decision-making system. In addition, a typical process of knowledge acquisition used while creating a knowledge base of an expert system has been presented. Following the convention of the formalization of knowledge adopted by J. Martin and J. Odell, a classification of objects (phenomena, relations) taking place while constructing a bridge has been suggested. Taking into consideration the essential advantages of these notations, i.e. the possibility of using them to model both algorithmic and heuristic problems, the authors of the paper recognize that in order to apply the expert systems in the field of civil engineering it is necessary to define, first of all, authentic databases.
