The kinds and properties of cements produced in Poland are discussed. The first place occupy the rapid hardening cements without - CEM I and with mineral additions - CEM II to CEM V. The highest heat of hydratation have the cements CEM I, especially of class 42,5 R and 52,5 R, and the lowest the slag cements CEM III/A and CEM III/B. The water demand of the cements CEM I group is increasing with their strength class and is linked to their specific surface. The water demand of CEM II/B with slag and/or fly ash addition is slightly higher because of the higher specific surface of cements. On the contrary, for the same strength class shrinkage is a little lower for cements with fly ash addition, but is practically the same for slag addition. As it is well known the mineral additions increase the durability of concrete in sulphate and chloride environment as well as they protect the concrete against AAR. As far as freeze thaw resistance of concrete is regarded, the cement with minerals needs addition of air entrainment admixture and the air content should be about 5%. Discussing the influence of cement on the concrete properties, one must remember that we are in the period of dynamic development of concrete technology and the utilization of admixtures as well as reactive powders will change these relations and decrease the role of cement.
