XIX-wieczny Poznań to główny ośrodek administracyjny i wojskowy Wielkiego Księstwa Poznańskiego, jedna z największych i najważniejszych twierdz w Prusach. Istotny udział pruskiej administracji i wojska w życiu miasta powodował, że samorząd przykładał bardzo dużą wagę do zapewnienia ludności wysokich standardów cywilizacyjnych. W tym celu zbudowano i uruchomiono w 1866 r. nowoczesny wodociąg centralny. Bazował on na ujęciu powierzchniowym z Warty, które było niepewne sanitarnie. Dlatego też już od lat 70. XIX w. rozważano przejście na pobór wód gruntowych względnie źródlanych. Skuteczne badania nad ujęciem gruntowym rozpoczęto w latach 90. XIX w. W efekcie już w 1898 r. cale miasto było zasilane wodą gruntową, uzdatnianą na terenie starego wodociągu rzecznego przy Grobli. Na początku XX w. zrealizowano drugie ujęcie gruntowe - na Dębcu. Rozbudowywane w kolejnych dekadach stanowi jeszcze dziś główne źródło zaopatrzenia miasta w wodę. Proces ewolucji systemu wodociągowego Poznania pokazuje prawidłowości charakterystyczne dla wielu średnich i dużych miast Prus, czerpiących wodę z rzek (np. przechodzenie z wody rzecznej na gruntową). Jednocze-śnie widać też, że zmiany te przebiegały w Poznaniu nieco szybciej aniżeli w innych dużych miastach pruskiego wschodu (Wroclaw, Szczecin).

Nineteenth-centurv Poznan is the principal administrative and military center of the Grand Duchy of Posen, one of the largest and most important strongholds in Prussia. An important part of the Prussian administration and the army in the life of the city meant that the government applied a very high importance to the population of high standards of civilization. In that order, built and launched in 1866 a modern central water supply system. It was based on the recognition surface of the Warta River, which was precarious sanitary. Therefore, since the 70s Nineteenth century, considered the transition to abstraction of groundwater or spring. Effective research on the intake dramatically started in the 90s As a result, the nineteenth century, as early as 1898, the city was supplied with ground water, treatment of the old aqueduct in the river at the Causeway. In the early twentieth century, realized the second shot land - in Dębcu. Expanded in subsequent decades, is today the main source of city water supply. The process of evolution of the water supply system Poznan shows regularity characteristic of many medium and large towns of Prussia, drawing water from the rivers (eg transition from river water to groundwater). At the same time also shows that these changes take place in Poznan, slightly faster than in other major cities in East Prussia (Wroclaw, Szczecin, Poland).
