The investigation results of the harmfulness for the environment of moulding sands with bentonite and lustrous carbon carriers - produced by 4 EU Companies - are presented in the paper. Investigations of the educed gases and their content of BTEX components (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) were carried out by means of the new method and experimental stand developed in the Faculty of Foundry Engineering, AGH, guarantying a high reproducibility of results. The obtained results indicate significant diversification of the generated gases amounts as well as of the content of analysed compounds, especially carcinogenic benzene (differences in benzene concentrations are even more than doubled). The developed methodology of the harmfulness assessment can be applied for all kinds of binding agents.
