Ceny ropy naftowej wywierają przemożny wpływ na tempo rozwoju gospodarczego. Załamanie światowej koniunktury w połowie 2008 r. doskonale to dokumentuje. Rekordowo wysokie notowania baryłki ropy naftowej latem 2008 r., poprzedzające giełdowy krach i fale upadłości w sektorze bankowym w drugiej jego połowie, nie przyczyniły się jednak do nich bezpośrednio. W dużej mierze wyniesienie cen ropy naftowej do wspomnianego poziomu stanowiło konsekwencje postrzeganie przez inwestorów rynku surowcowego jako stosunkowo bezpiecznego i lokowania w nim środków wycofywanych pośpiesznie z ryzykownych przedsięwzięć kapitałowych w pierwszym półroczu 2008 r.
The prices of crude oil exert major influence on the speed of economic development. The downturn in mid 2008 illustrates this perfectly. Extremely high barrel quotations in the summer of 2008 preceded the stock market crash and waves of bankruptcy in the banking sector in the second half of the year. This, however, was not the direct cause of the latter events. Their direct reason was the fact that the investors perceived the raw materials market as safe, and hurried to invest there all their financial resources, which they had withdrawn from risky capital enterprises, in the first half of the year 2008. Therefore, it be seen merely as a catalyst of the process itself. Nevertheless, the continuous growth of the prices of crude oil in the previous years was the basis of economic stagnation and crisis on the estate market in the USA. This process was already noticeable in the year 2007, and later gave rise to the above mentioned transfer of speculative capital onto the raw materials market.
