Praca poświęcona jest przedstawieniu metod opisu zjawiska dyssypacji energii (łac. dissipatio - rozproszenie, roztrwonienie, marnotrawstwo |1|) w mechanice. Termin mechanika należy tu rozumieć w szerszym kontekście niż ma to miejsce w klasycznym kursie fizyki, w którym mechanikę dzieli się na statykę, kinematykę i dynamikę. Dobrym przykładem prezentowanej w tej pracy tematyki objętej pojęciem mechanika jest książka Cz. Rymarza Mechanika ośrodków ciągłych |123|, gdzie oprócz zagadnień stricte mechanicznych, rozważane są również procesy zachodzące pod wpływem pól termicznych i elektromagnetycznych, a więc uwzględnia się zarówno termodynamikę, jak i elektrodynamikę ciał materialnych, czyli tzw. pola sprzężone. W prezentowanej publikacji zebrano rezultaty prac uzyskanych przez autora samodzielnie lub we współpracy z polskimi i z zagranicznymi naukowcami, a opublikowanymi w wielu znaczących krajowych i międzynarodowych czasopismach naukowych i prezentowanych podczas konferencji naukowych w kraju i za granicą.
