Termin "najlepsza praktyka" stał się w ostatnich latach jednym z najczęściej stosowanych zarówno w kręgach akademickich, jak i biznesowych. Można go znaleźć w podręcznikach akademickich i prasie fachowej, usłyszeć podczas dyskusji prowadzonych w gabinetach menedżerów i na konferencjach, czy spotkać na wielu stronach www w Internecie. Termin ten zadomowił się już od dłuższego czasu w służbie zdrowia, administracji rządowej, systemie edukacji, zarządzaniu projektami czy pracach nad rozwojem produktów hardware'owych i software'owych. Jest szeroko, choć nieco bezrefleksyjnie, używany we wszystkich dyscyplinach zarządzania, w tym także w logistyce i zarządzaniu łańcuchem dostaw. Bliższa analiza wskazuje jednak, że termin ten rzadko jest precyzyjniezdefiniowany, najczęściej nie jest jednolicie rozumiany, a przytaczane przykłady rzadko mają charakter osiągnięć biznesowych zasługujących na nagłośnienie i przedrostek "naj".

The notion of best practices is considered by some as a business buzzword used to describe the process of developing and following a standard way of doing things that multiple organisations can use for management. In fact by "best" are meant those practices that have proven successful in practice, shown to produce superior results and helped firms to achieve competitive advantage. The term best practices is widely used and often abused in technology development, construction, transportation, health care, government administration, education, various aspects of business management, but also in logistics and supply chain management. The main barriers to adoption of a best practice are a lack of knowledge about current best practices, a lack of motivation to make changes involved in their adoption, and a lack of knowledge and skills required to do so. To overcome such barriers in the field of logistics and supply chain management in Europe the European Commission initiated the BestLog research project. The project started in February 2006 and will end in early 2010. The project team consists of 9 research partners from 9 European countries. Poland is represented within the project by the Department of Logistics, Warsaw School of Economics. The project will establish an exchange platform for the improvement of supply chain management practice across Europe. Objective of the project is to establish an ongoing, self-funding, non-profit European platform for collection and active dissemination of logistics best practices to improve supply chain practice, improve supply chain education, reduce differences across Europe, set standards, create growth and jobs, and achieve better match between EC policy and business decisions.
