W artykule zaprezentowano problematykę, związaną z funkcjonowaniem fabryki przemysłu ciężkiego w środku miasta. Autor rysuje tło historyczne jak doszło do tego, że Odlewnia Żeliwa WULKAN SA znalazła się w samym centrum Częstochowy, oraz jakim wymaganiom z zakresu ochrony środowiska naturalnego musiał sprostać zakład, aby móc współcześnie działać w zgodzie z normami ekologicznymi oraz z mieszkańcami okolicznym osiedli. Artykuł przedstawia fabrykę, która z uciążliwego emitora pyłów, ścieków i trujących gazów przekształciła się w bezpieczny dla otoczenia, nowoczesny zakład wyposażony w wysokiej klasy urządzenia chroniące środowisko naturalne. Zastosowane instalacje odpylające pozwoliły osiągnąć podstawowy dla dalszego istnienia fabryki cel - ochronić środowisko. Systematyczne szkolenia doprowadziły do zmiany mentalności załogi odlewni - udało się zaszczepić dbałość o środowisko naturalne w każdym pracowniku firmy. Autor przytacza wyniki badań laboratoryjnych z okresu przed i po modernizacji; przedsta także, jak zmieniały się wskaźniki zużycia energii, wody oraz wyemitowanych ścieków i pyłów w przeliczeniu na wielkość produkcji zakładu w okresie wprowadzania zmian. Rezultatem podjętych przedsięwzięć proekologicznych są: funkcjonowanie w firmie systemu zarządzania środowiskowego oraz przyznane nagrody i wyróżnienia.

In the article the problems connected with the functioning of a heavy industry factory in the middle of the city are presented. The author gives the historical background of how it happened that Wulkan Iron Foundry SA found itself in the middle of Czejstochowa and what requirements from the sphere of environmental protection it had to cope with to be able to function according to the ecological standards and the demands of inhabitants of the neighbouring housing estates. The article presents the factory which from the burdensome emitter of dust, waste water and toxic gases became transformed in to the safe for the surroundings modern plant equipped with advanced installations protecting the natural environment. The applied dedusting equipment allowed to achieve the main aim connected with the further factory existence, it means the environmental protection. The regular training led to change the attitude of the foundry staff. They succeeded in implementing the care of natural environment to every worker of the firm. The author mentions the results of the laboratory tests from the period before and after the modernisation and he also presents the changes in the factors of the consumption of energy, water, emitted waste water and dust when calculating them in the production rate during the period of the introduction of changes. The results of the undertaken proecological actions are as follows: functioning in the firm of the environmental management system and the granted awards and distinctions.
