Zircon pigments are crystal, synthetic coloured compounds with crystal lattice of zirconium silicate. These pigments are produced when zirconia is combined with silica in the temperature of about 1500 degrees centigrade, in the presence of chromophores (e.g. vanadium, praseodymium, iron, cobalt) that are built into ZrSiO4 lattice. The product of this process are blue, yellow, pink and grey pigments. The process of production of zircon pigments is a solid-state reaction. Besides breaking and producing chemical bonds, there are also taking place crystallographic changes. The reaction starts in points of intergranular contacts. The speed of reaction is a function of contacts' quantity. The contacts depend on quantitative composition and properties of reaction mixture. In this article were presented effects of influence of reactants' properties on the colour of chosen zirconium pigments.
