One of the customs of British universities is for a newly appointed professor to give an "inaugural lecture" on a subject of his/her choice. The author delivered his inaugural lecture on 8 February 1994 on the theme of "Engineering Materials Research at Bradford - The European Dimension and The Importance of Understanding Polish". As the title indicates, the presentation dealt mainly with the European Community co-operative projects on which the inaugural lecturer was then working. The introduction referred to his masters or teachers: Bridgman, Popper, Cottrell, Griffith and Huber. This paper deals with Huber's influence on the author's research on failure criteria in ceramic and composite materials.
