The influence of Sc and Zr additions on the structure of cast and heat treated Al-1.0Mg-0.6Si-1.0Cu (in wt. %) alloys was investigated. The best grain refining effect was observed in the alloy containing 0.4% Sc and 0.2% Zr in as cast condition while the alloy with 0.4% Sc and without Sc addition consisted of large grains with dendritic sub-structure. Annealing of alloys in the temperature range from 300 to 540oC leads to a slight hardness increase if Sc or SC + Zr are present. This hardness increase results from the precipitation of fcc L12-type Al3(Sc,Zr) spherical particles uniformly distributed in the matrix. In the Sc-containing alloy, Al3Sc precipitates of about 50-80 nm in size are semicoherent and surrounded by misfit dislocations in the matrix. The addition of Zr reduces the Al3(Sc,Zr) precipitate sizes o about 20-40 nm and complete coherence with the matrix is maintained. After additional ageing at 165 degees centigrade, needle-like precipitates of the metastable Q' phase was found. They cause a further increase in hardness of the alloys.
