The effect of copper on precipitation sequence of Al-Mg-SI alloys has been studied and discussed by many researchers. However, there is no suitable explanation yet. We studied the precipitation sequence of this alloy by using the high-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HRTEM) technique and several metastable phases and their crystal structures as well as the lattice parameter determined in our previous research. Recently, we have found that the segregation of copper occurs at the interface between the Q'-phase in the Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy by energy-filtering TEM (EFTEM). In this work, we found a new precipitate, which existed in samples of Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy aged at low temperature and had an elongated shape.
