In this study we were concerned with the reductions of grain size in nickel coatings obtained by addition of D1 organic substances into a multi-component electrolyte containing nickel sulfate, nickel chloride and boric acid. The coatings were obtained by the direct current (DC) electrodeposition process with different current densities of 1, 3 and 6 A/cubic dm. Influence of the DC densities on the structure, topography and morphology of nanocrystalline nickel coatings obtained by the electroplating method were investigated. The coatings were subjected to X-ray diffraction and their grain sizes have been determined by applying the Scherrer formula. To verify the accuracy of the grain size measurements, the nickel coatings were examined by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The microstructures of the costings were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The performed investigations have confirmed that addition of an organic substance D1 into the electrolytic bath appears to be a suitable way of creating strong nanostructures of nickel deposits.
