The paper presents results of fluid-bed diffusion enrichment of the 20H steel surface layer with interstitial atoms of C and N followed by subsequent laser hardening. The influence of various power densities of laser radiation on the structure and hardness of hardened layers has been determined. It has been proved that for low densities of laser power the decaying of the fusion and transition zones takes place. Hardened layers have fine acicular structure of martensite with carbide precipitations along the former austenite grain boundaries. The transition zone with its martensitic-ferritic structure can be easily distinguished from the ferritic-pearlitic matrix. Distribution of hardness along the symmetry axes of the cross-sections of hardened layers and along the lines perpendicular to the direction of laser radiation has been specified.
