Basing on the linear approximation of the heating source, the distributions of a temperature in the sample of steel S4 (SW7M) caused by laser hardening without melting were calculated. Thermal quantities describing thermal cycles were determined. Considerations concerning the rate of the dissolution of carbides during the thermal cycle were carried out. Results point out that carbides in the near-surface layer (about 5 mm deep) are dissolved completly despite the short time of the thermal cycle.
