The analysis of the literature concerning an effect of the surface roughness on the oil film thickness in the concentrated contact has been presented. Modelling the asperity contact in the mixed lubrication regime has been discussed. Theoretical solution to the lubracation problem for machine elements concerning the surface roughness have been presented. These solutions were divided into two groups. The first group included solutions operating with the averaged Reynolds equation concerning the average pressure of the oil film (analytical and simulation solutions). The second one operated with the local pressure
