The life cycle assessment (LCA) method is a new analytical tool, which makes it possible to formulate quantitative description of the environmental impact of objects, services, and processes throughout their whole conventional period of existence. lt consists in identifying and quantifying the raw materials and energy consumed, pollutants emitted, and wastes generated and then evaluating their potential environmental effects. The possibility of applying the LCA approach to the analysis of environmental properties of motor vehicles has been examined in this paper. The basic methodological aspects of the life cycle assessment have been presented. Within the study, the environmental impact of a passenger car with a diesel engine was analysed. Most attention was devoted to the assumptions concerning the methods of vehicle use. To tackle this issue, two vehicle motion models representing the road conditions prevailing in Poland were developed. In one of them, the vehicle motion in urban, extra-urban, and high-speed traffic conditions was taken into account. The other model represented the traffic conditions typical for street congestions. These models were compared with the vehicle motion model built in the form of a vehicle speed program as adopted in the NEDC type-approval driving test. Based on the vehicle motion models and stochastic characteristics of pollutant emissions determined with the use of the Monte Carlo methods, the on-road pollutant emissions and fuel consumption were determined for the motor vehicle. The data obtained were used for describing the style of vehicle use within the life cycle assessment. The results obtained we re found to be very susceptible to the assumptions made.

W artykule rozważono możliwość zastosowania oceny cyklu istnienia do analizy właściwości ekologicznych samochodów. Przedstawiono jej podstawowe aspekty metodyczne. Dokonano analizy wpływu na środowisko samochodu osobowego z silnikiem o zapłonie samoczynnym. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono założeniom dotyczącym sposobów użytkowania samochodu. W tym celu opracowano dwa modele ruchu samochodu reprezentujące warunki drogowe w Polsce. W pierwszym modelu uwzględniono ruch samochodu w miastach, poza miastami i na trasach szybkiego ruchu. Drugi model odpowiada warunkom ruchu typowym dla zatorów ulicznych. Utworzone modele zestawiono z modelem ruchu w postaci przebiegu prędkości w homologacyjnym teście jezdnym NEDC. Na podstawie modeli ruchu i stochastycznych charakterystyk emisji zanieczyszczeń utworzonych metodą Monte Carlo wyznaczono emisję drogową zanieczyszczeń i zużycie paliwa przez samochód. Uzyskane dane wykorzystano do opisu użytkowania samochodu w ocenie cyklu istnienia. Stwierdzono znaczną wrażliwość otrzymanych wyników na przyjęte założenia.
