Współczesne miasto jest czymś innym niż to, które było kiedyś. Dawniej "sercem miasta", rozumianym jako miejsce, w którym koncentrowało się życie publiczne jego mieszkańców, był rynek. Początkowo dominowała tu głównie funkcja handlowa, zaś w otaczających go ulicach lokowano karczmy, zajazdy i zakłady rzemieślnicze. Dawne "serce miasta", rynek i przylegające do niego ulice zaczynają pełnić w dzień funkcję edukacyjną i komercyjną. Dawne kamienice mieszczańskie, w których przyziemie pełniło funkcje handlową, zaś na piętrach mieszkali właściciel i lokatorzy, zamieniane są w obiekty czysto komercyjne, hotelowe bądź obiekty gastronomiczne. Wieczorami dawne "serce miasta" staje się obecnym "sercem miasta" i tak jak to jest w Krakowie - rynek zamienia się na europejską stołówkę, połączoną z wyszynkiem.

A contemporary city is something different than what it used to be. In the past, the Market Square constituted "the heart of the city", understood as the place where the public life of its inhabitants concentrated. Originally, the commercial function dominated this space, while the surrounding streets housed taverns, inns, and workshops. The former "heart of the city", the market square and its neighboring streets, now start to serve educational and commercial purposes. Former tenement houses of burgesses, whose ground floors had a commercial function while the upper floors were inhabited by owners and tenants, are now turned into strictly commercial, hotel or eating facilities. In the evening, the former "heart of the city" becomes the present "heart of the city" and, as is the case in Kraków, the Market Square turns into a European canteen combined with a pub.
