The paper emphasizes the role of defining notions in cognitive processes. In spite of practical utility (or lack of utility) of defining for the development of particular discipline it has also an intellectual value, since enables us deepening our thinking and comprehension of the subject matter. The conviction is expressed, that in the case of defining notions as complex as architecture, more convenient way than constructing classical definitions is the gradual approximation to the essence of notion through making the list of its critical features, defining the field of the discypline. It does not exclude building the so called real definitions, consisted of such parts, as definiendum and definiens, in which the latter is comprised of genus proximum and differentia specifica. It was ascertained that the essence of architecture (or its differentia specifica) is the cooperation and reciprocal penetration of the three general aspects: spatial structure, behavioral aspects and cultural aspects. This threefold division has only some features in common with virtuvian triad. In fact, it differently defines the rank of particular aspects as well as differently places the accents on them.
