Searching for new means of artistic expression through the use of new and more original techniques is quite common in art, especially in our century. Giving up traditional methods, habits and prejudice for the sake of experimental techniques based on chemists' inventions has been a widespread practice among painters. Jan Bruzda has searched for and experimented with new techniques in Poland since 1958. He carried out his research at the Department of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, the Faculty of Architecture of Cracow University of Technology. In the course of his experiments he proved polystyrene to be a fine artistic material, especially in painting. His experimental programme included thermoplastics, thermo- and chemosetting polymers such as polymethacrylate, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate as well as melamine, polyester and epoxide resins. According to professor Bruzda's general principle, the techniques used in art must be confirmed not only by scientific experiments but also artistic creation. Therefore he has made many stained glass windows and objects of spatial painting which have been installed in architectural objects and presented in numerous exhibitions. Most of hiis works, ranging from abstract spatial painting to realistic portraits, have been made in polystyrene. His pictures are clearly divided into thematic cycles. He transfers his fascination with neww motifs, moods and sentiments into surfaces or transparent panels and composes them with utmost care. Relative simplicity of some technical solutions in polystyrene painting has allowed it to be introduced into the teaching programme of the Faculty of Architecture in Krakow. Drawing plays a significant part in all artistic activities of Jan Bruzda. He puts forward a thesis that drawing is to a great extent, a criterion that determins the adaption of a specific technique and polystyrene techniques have passed their examination in drawing with flying colours.
