Uruchomienie pierwszej linii kolejowej Stockton-Darlington w 1825 r. było ukoronowaniem wieloletniej pracy całej rzeszy konstruktorów i wynalazców. Był to zarazem początek ery kolei parowej, która na wiele dziesiątków lat stała się dominującym środkiem transportu. Szybko rozwijająca się sieć kolejowa była motorem przemian społecznych i ekonomicznych określanych powszechnie mianem rewolucji przemysłowej.
