A number of syntheses coumarin derivatives by Knoevenagel and Pechmann condensations was carried out. It was found out that Knoevenagel condensation gives better product yields. Then the coumarin derivatives were converted into methacrylate monomers that were copolymerised with methacrylate containing carbazolyl groups to give photo- and electroluminescent polymeric materials.
