Surface temperature in laser forming

Investigations on bending plates by use of laser beam with circular cross-section are presented. Laser beam was modelled as the heat source of finite dimensions moving over the plate surface. Temperature distribution in the plastified layer of the material was taken into considerations. The bend angle was investigated as a function of processing parameters. Two analytical approximations for fast and slow moving heat source were developed. Derived formula for surface temperature allowed finding that effective bending occurs when the material surface temperature is close to the melting temperature. Optimal Fourier number for the process has been determined. Surface temperature measurements were realised with two-color fiber-optic pyrometer. On-line temperature and deformation measurements confirmed theoretical results.
