The article provides an overview of the floodplain management in the foreign countries. The development and implementation of floodplain management and its role in reducing flood damages in Poland are also presented. Increasing attention has been focused on three basis problems: - purposes and principles of delimitating of flood threat zones, - the analyze of the level of flood threat in this areas and its reducing, - the guidance concerning proper construction methods for buildings in flood hazard areas.
