Seasonal variation in nutrient (DP, N-NO3,DKN) concentrations of subsurface waters passing through a wetland zone were examined in the Jorka river-lake system (Masurian Lakeland) over the periods from April through November of 1996-1998. The study was conducted in three wetlands: two located on the lake shores and one bordering on the Jorka river. They represent typical sites and vegetation for lakeland regions. The field study was conducted with the use of piezometers situated along transects. Laboratory experiments were carried out with the use of undisturbed soil cores taken from wetlands. In most cases, mean nutrient concentrations in subsurface waters steadily from 20% to 90% when passing through wetland zones in the direction from the land, especially within the first 5-7 m section. The laboratory experiments showed that under reduced conditions of water-satured soils, denitrification may be responsible for nitrogen removal. But under these conditions, dissolved mineral phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen were released.
